Why do I have an itchy bottom?
Believe it or not anal itching or a strong need to scratch the skin around your anus is quite common (Pruritus Ani)
It can often be classed as too much of an embarrassing symptom to discuss but it is important that you do and here is why…
What causes anal itching?
- A bacterial infection
- A skin condition such as atopic Eczema or Psoriasis
- Piles or Haemorrhoids. This is encouraged by the discharge they produce
- In children this can be caused by worms
It can be made worse by:
- Moisture – such as using wet wipes
- Woollen clothing or blankets
- Tight clothing or underwear
- Soiling yourself
- Stress & Anxiety
If you have experienced anal itching for more than a few days we would advise you visit your GP to find out what is causing this often frustrating and embarrassing sensation. Itchy bottom can affect people of all ages however it occurs more frequently in patients aged 40-70 years of age. It can not only affect you physically but also mentally, as the area is so intimate and therefore seen as embarrassing it can often lead to anxiety.
Once your GP has examined your symptoms you will be provided with a diagnosis and plan of treatment. Don’t suffer in silence, book an appointment at a time that suits you and get rid of that pain in the bottom.
