Fat Transfer is pretty much what it says on the tin! This procedure involves removing fat from one area of the body where it is not necessarily wanted (usually the tummy, hips, thighs or buttocks) and then transferred to another area of the body to enhance areas such as breasts, face or buttocks.
This is a popular procedure for patients who do not wish to explore the alternative options of surgery or the insertion of devices such as breast implants which generally involve a longer recovery period and repeated long term revisions.
After an examination your surgeon will discuss with you the potential areas for harvesting the fat. The surgeon may discuss performing the operation in stages, so he or she will look at other potential secondary donor sites. This procedure is usually performed under a general anaesthetic as a day case procedure or with a planned overnight stay.
The procedure involves collecting the fat by liposuction (see liposuction information here). Once the fat is collected it is filtered by a centrifugation process and the filtered fat is then re-injected into the appropriate area (e.g. the breast). Usually about 60 – 80% of the fat transfer will work; if you try and force too much in, for example, to overly enhance the breast size then the tension created diminishes the effectiveness of the transfer. If you want a significant change then you may be required to have repeated procedures.
