Eyelid Cosmetic Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

As skin ages, it gradually loses its elasticity. This lack of elasticity plus the constant pull from gravity causes excessive skin to collect on the upper and lower eyelids, causing wrinkles and bulges. On the upper eyelids, an extra fold of skin can hang over the eyelashes.

Eyelid Cosmetic Surgery will not eliminate dark circles under the eyes, crow’s feet or other facial wrinkles and is often performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as laser resurfacing, filler injections, or forehead lifts.

Expert assessment will reveal which factors are contributing to lower lid eye bags so the appropriate treatment can be identified. Lower (or upper) lid eye bags are not always age related – they can be inherited – and the aim of treatment is to harmonise the eyelid and cheeks, to minimise shadow, and to refresh and rejuvenate face.

Upper Eyelid Cosmetic Surgery

With Upper Eyelid Surgery, your Cosmetic Surgeon will first mark the individual lines and creases of the lids in order to keep the scars as invisible as possible along these natural folds. The incision is made, excess fat is removed or repositioned and then loose muscle and skin are removed. Fine sutures (stitches) are used to close the incisions, thereby minimizing scarring.

Lower Eyelid Cosmetic Surgery

With Lower Eyelid Surgery, your surgeon will make the incision in an inconspicuous site along the lash line and ‘smile-creases’ of the lower eyelid. Excess fat, muscle and skin are then trimmed away before the incision is closed with fine sutures.

Some consultants also reduce eyelid puffiness (caused primarily by excess fat) by performing a Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty. The incision in this case is made inside the lower eyelid and excess fatty material is removed. When sutures are used to close this kind of incision, they are invisible to the eye, are usually self-dissolving and leave no visible scar.

What To Expect After Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

Under normal conditions, Eyelid Surgery can take from 1-2 hours. Surgery may be performed under local anaesthesia (if only for upper eyelids) or general anaesthesia.

You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your surgery. You should also have someone stay with you on the night of the procedure. You should expect some tenderness and minor swelling around the eyes, although this will soon pass and any discomfort can be eased with painkillers.
