How does it work?
MonaLisa Touch is the latest treatment that uses laser energy to remedy a number of vaginal symptoms including; dryness, vulval burning, mild bladder incompetence, painful intercourse, soreness and irritation. This treatment delivers a controlled energy to the vaginal walls and encourages the cells to produce more collagen, which helps with rehydrate and restore the functional tissue.
This type of vaginal discomfort typically occurs during pre-menopause or post-child birth. The main cause is usually atrophic vaginitis, which is a disease that many women do not recognise or report. For women enduring these debilitating symptoms, confidence, sexual pleasure and relationships with partners can all be affected.
MonaLisa Touch can also act as an excellent treatment for women who experience vaginal laxity. Caused usually by natural events, such as giving birth or aging, the tissue relaxation of the vaginal walls can cause women to have a “loose vagina”. If the problem is caused by mucosal tone loss, the CO2 fractional laser can work to regenerate the area. However, in these cases our gynaecologist will have to evaluate the state of the vagina and exclude the possibility of prolapse or muscle damage.
The procedure itself is relatively quick and virtually painless. After your initial consultation and examination with the gynaecologist, your laser treatment will be conducted in an outpatient clinic. There is no anaesthetic required, but patients may feel some slight discomfort from the laser probe tip insertion, especially if you suffer with vaginal dryness.
Patients will usually be required to have three treatments, at four to six week intervals. Once these three treatments have been completed you may require one more follow-up treatments a year in order to maintain the results. This laser procedure has minimal risks and most women only report a few temporary side effects, such as redness or swelling.
Long term sufferers of atrophic vaginitis are likely to see results immediately, even after the first treatment. In subsequent months the symptoms will alleviate significantly, especially after all three treatments have been completed. In terms of recovery, most women state that they return to their usual routine after one to three days after each procedure.
